Sugar City

Yesterday Stanzie and I went to Sugar City to ride bikes with my friend Kelly. She's lived there her whole life, so she knows this place like the back of her hand. Sugar City is just a tiny bit bigger than my town in Virginia.

Kelly borrowed two bikes from neighbors so Stanzie and I could ride. We rode out to the cemetary where Kelly had some friends/relatives buried. It was kind of sad for me to walk around, especially as we saw so many children/baby graves. Stanzie wasn't sad... she said it was just "melancholy."

Yeah, ask her for the difference.

On the way back we took pictures by this lady's house who just had tons of flowers out front. She actually left while we were taking pictures, and as she drove out of her driveway she had this giant smile on her face. Either she was glad we were enjoying her flowers, or she was leaving for the cops. Since she was super old, and we didn't see any cops, I'm guessing it was the first. :) We really did enjoy her flowers.

Sugar City started out as a town that made sugar and had sugar factories. Apparently, now this one is used to house potatoes, but it's not even used much for that anymore.

As for the above picture? You're welcome. (I have no idea what I was doing...)

Our final stop was to get milkshakes. They were great! I took a picture before this one and started making fun of how white Stanzie looked next to Kelly's dark tan. So Stanzie put on her sunglasses to try to counter it. I LOVE this picture! I just love it!

I have the greatest friends EVER!

Story of My Life

Why is it so easy to write on here, and yet so impossible to write college papers sometimes...

I found this while procrastinating writing a college paper--

How to write a paper in college/university:

1. Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a well lit place in front of your computer.

2. Log onto Facebook and Gmail. Check your email.

3. Read over the assignment carefully, to make certain you understand it.

4. Walk down to the vending machines and buy some chocolate to help you concentrate.

5. Check your email.

6. Call up a friend and ask if he/she wants to go to grab a coffee. Just to get settled down and ready to work.

7. When you get back to your room, sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lit place in front of your computer.

8. Read over the assignment again to make absolutely certain you understand it.

9. Check your email.

10. You know, you haven't written to that kid you met at camp since fourth grade. You'd better write that letter now and get it out of the way so you can concentrate.

11. Look at your teeth in the bathroom mirror.

12. Grab some mp3's off of itunes.

13. Check your email.

14. Facebook chat with one of your friends about the future.

15. Check your email.

16. Listen to your new mp3s and download some more.

17. Phone your friend on the other floor and ask if she's started writing yet. Exchange derogatory remarks about your professor, the course, the college, and the world at large.

18. Walk to the store and buy a pack of gum. You've probably run out.

19. While you've got the gum you may as well buy a magazine and read it.

20. Check your email.

21. Check the newspaper listings to make sure you aren't missing something truly worthwhile on TV.

22. Play some solitare.

23. Make sure you're sitting in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lit place.

24. Wash your hands.

25. Call up a friend to see how much they have done, probably haven't started either.

26. Look through your roommate's book of pictures from home. Ask who everyone is.

27. Sit down and do some serious thinking about your plans for the future.

28. Check your friend's blogs. Check your email again, just in case.

29. Do some light cleaning of your room to help you focus.

30. Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lit place.

31. Read over the assignment one more time, just for heck of it.

32. Scoot your chair across the room to the window and watch the sunrise.

33. Lie face down on the floor and moan.

34. Punch the wall and break something.

35. Check your email.

36. Mumble obscenities.

37. 5am - start writing on the paper without stopping. 6am - paper is finished.

38. Complain to everyone that you didn't get any sleep because you had to write that stupid paper.

39. Go to class, hand in paper, and leave right away so you can take a nap.

....Maybe I should get back to that paper I'm supposed to be writing. Well, all three of them, actually. :)

What Do You Mean By "Text?"

I'm taking several online classes this semester. This week, being introduction week, has felt very overwhelming. But then again, the first week of school always feels overwhelming because you're introduced to the insane workload that will be posed all semester but it always feels like I need to get everything done right now. Especially since I'm going on a vacation next week.

Anyway, most of my online classes (and by most, I mean all) require me to take a syllabus quiz proving that I've read through the syllabus. Two of these classes had the same question on their syllabus quiz and that's why I'm writing here today.

The question was: This class requires text. True/False

Simple question, right? WRONG!

Neither class required a textbook. However, both classes had text within the course that needed to be read. Things like articles, bits from other books, stories, etc. etc.

On the first quiz, I interpreted "text" just as it is and answered "true." Because there was indeed "text" written on my page at that very moment. The answer was false.

So I went to the other quiz with the same exact question. I even checked the syllabus to see if it said anything about text. Then I took the quiz and answered "false." The answer was true.

This is just plain not fair!

Project Inspire

This past week was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my entire life. My post earlier this week tells literally every single thing that I knew about this. I basically paid these strangers fifty bucks to plan my week break for me, and just went along with the ride. And it was certainly the best ride of my life.

28 college students and our school's "Service Committee Guy." I had no idea what I was getting myself into as we left Monday morning. No idea.

The camp site was called "Camp Hunt" and it was an old, beaten down boy scout camp located on Bear Lake (which is right on the border between Utah and Idaho). The camp recently received a ton of money to fix it up. We basically went down there to fix it up.

Our work included moving more gigantic logs than I ever knew existed on this planet, building and planting new camp signs throughout the campground, building and moving new picnic tables, shoveling out some smallish rivers so the water could drain back down into the lake, cleaning all the dust and grime out of the kitchen, cleaning and painting the pantry (including moving all of the stuff and furniture out, organizing it, throwing out bad stuff, and bringing everything back in after the painting), chopping more firewood than you'd ever think existed, and going to two senior homes to leave cards of love and sing songs to the elderly.

The first day the only thing we did was move those gigantic logs. Piles of them. And just when I was completely beat and could hardly even lift my arms anymore, Trevor came and told us there was more. We hadn't even completed one third of the camp site. There was one indoor toilet for the thirty of us to share. No showers (just the lake...). Two outhouses, but one was standing only. The weather was freezing.

I'll be honest, I though about going home after the first day. Even had I wanted to, though, I couldn't since I was in nowhere-ville and had no transportation. I was stuck.

In the end, however, it was worth every second. I freaking LOVED this week! I learned so much! Here we go. I learned: how to fix a toilet (the indoor toilet was kind of junky anyway and after having thirty people start using it... it broke a lot. I was always able to fix it!), how to paint a pantry, including loads of shelves and how wood always seems to suck up paint, how important a good attitude is, how difficult yet rewarding it is to work (and play) well with others, how to make stuffed French Toast, that boys can will still talk to me and even ask for my number even if I haven't showered in a week, that when boys rock the canoe it scares the crap out of me, what a Silver Beaver in scouting is (and met one), how to give massages (and received tons), that I suck at Ultimate Frisbee, and loads more. It was a totally awesome.

As I said before. Best. Decision. EVER!

Cake and Project Inspire

Natalie and I have had the house to ourselves for the past day or so. Tonight, we decided we wanted cake since we're both out of food and we knew we had ingredients to make chocolate cake from scratch. So we tried to make a cake. Except we didn't have three 9 inch round pans. All we had was a square, a circle, and some cupcake pans.

Then we wanted to make frosting. But we didn't have any confectioner's sugar. So we improvised with that as well.

This is what we ended up with.

Oh, and we had extra ricotta cheese that Natalie wanted to get rid of. So we added that too. Did you know you can do that to chocolate cake? And it actually tastes good?

The fact is as horrible as this cake looks, that's how wonderful it tastes. Except, we can only eat like one cupcake's worth before being full because it's sooooo rich. Mmmmm!

In other news I'm taking off to Project Inspire tomorrow! Basically I'm spending the week at Bear Lake with about 25 other college students building camp sites (which I think includes flattening out land for tents and building picnic tables... I think), painting a county pool (I'm assuming they're taking the water out), and visiting an old folk's home. I'll let you know more about that on Friday when I return! I hope it's fun!

Feet and Roommate Pics

Kudos if you know which one's mine! :)

Starting with the one in the 1 o'clock position, going clockwise, I will label them A, B (with the yellow toe), C, D, E, and F.

This might help you out a bit.

If we did Christmas cards... I'd pick these!

Pictures were all taken by Natalie. I only edited them.

My Room

I went to see the movie Unknown with my friend Kelly a few nights ago. For the record, it's extremely intense, but I really liked it a lot. I think it was the most intense movie I've ever seen in terms of action, scariness, thinking (okay, Inception required a lot of thinking and confusion, but too much to the point that I just thought it was stupid and boring), and explosions and car chases. Oh, and the totally unexpected ending that I never, in a million years, would have guessed. My only negative for the movie is that some of the car chase scenes were just too long and got kind of boring for a bit. Yeah, I get bored easily.

Anyway, the movie was good. I really like Liam Neeson I decided. And the world moved on.

I got home and Ashley and Stanzie were waiting for me (they didn't want to see the movie because they're boring). They spent their evening being "productive" and learning a new skill. How to make these little beauties...

A little while ago Stanz and I "decorated" Ashley's room similarly with the pink ribbon (also the same ribbon Natalie used to try and lock me in my room...). This pink ribbon's been through a lot!

Below is Ashley and Stanzie on my bed.

Also I'm pretty sure Stanz would want you to be aware that those are no ordinary fish. They're killer salmon. Not sure why she thought I'd find that comforting while I sleep in their midst but yeah... killer salmon.

Ashley's eating chocolate in that last one. They didn't just stop at my bed, though.

Pretty sure that ball of pink is the leftovers from Ashley's room that Stanz and I decorated about a week or so earlier.

Yeah, nice job. Too bad we only get to live with it for a week because of white glove. This week is finals week! ACK! I should probably be studying...

But going through pictures is just so much fun!

Ashley and I made cake mix brownies and then decided adding peanut butter would be delicious. It was.

Friday Music Video

The quality won't be as good if I were to upload it here... but if you love me, you will DEFINITELY want to go herhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gife and watch this Youtube video.

This was my final project for my Comm 497 class. Yes. I made this. And yes... I'm admitting that.

Big Fat Epic Major Fail

Our school cafeteria ("The Crossroads") tried to make a "BBQ Pork Sandwich" the special today. I wanted to get one because I miss having that good ol' country cooking back in Virginia. I LOVE pulled pork! Unfortunately, however, this is Idaho. And they have no clue about any of the major BBQ pork sandwich rules. For those that don't know, here's a list:

1. A BBQ pork sandwich much always be synonymous with a pulled pork sandwich. If the pork isn't pulled, you're stuck with a disgusting, dry chunk of pork coated in a sauce on the outside, but try and hard to eat on the inside. Not cool.

2. The ratios must be appropriate. There must be enough BBQ sauce to fully coat the entire outside of the pulled pork. This is why rule number one is so important. If the pork isn't pulled, there's no way you could possibly have enough sauce. Also, the bread to pulled pork ratio must be in tact. None of this stupid 95% meat and 5% bread. Who wants that? There has to be enough bread or you might as well not have any at all and be eating it with a fork!

3. BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches must always be served with cole slaw. Always. There are no exceptions to this rule. God was kind enough to make it so that nobody is allergic to cole slaw for this very purpose.

4. Fries are an unacceptable side for a pulled pork sandwich. Have these guys never heard of potato chips!? We're in Idaho, people! Get your potato styles right!

5. Always have extra sauce ready, just in case. Put it by the ketchup. Or, better yet, replace the ketchup. Some people like more sauce. Let them! It's okay.

6. There has to be at least a little bit of fat in the pork. It adds flavor and makes the pork the delightsome meal that it is! Make sure there is fat... not to much, not too little. See rule number 2 about proportions.

7. BY FAR THE MOST IMPORTANT! Remember: we don't eat these for their nutritional value. If I wanted to be healthy, I would have bought the grilled chicken salad.

There you have it. The seven major rules of BBQ Pulled pork sandwiches. I hope you all learned something new today.

Gosh, I miss Virginia!

Friday Night

I love my roommates. So. Stinkin'. Much.

Stanzie, Ashley, and me.

Stanz, Monica, and Ashley... looking somewhat seductive... I'm not really sure.

Chocolate brownies with chocolate hot fudge with chocolate ice cream. Best. Thing. EVER!

We were kind of tired after the movie so we tried to get pictures of our dog pile... Monica's head is MIA.

Me, Stanzie, Ashley, and Monica.

Me with my room roommate Stanzie!

This one's my favorite because it pretty much sums up the whole night...

There Are No Words...

This weekend was just.. well... I don't think there's any one word to describe it.

Exhausting: I woke up at 4am to catch the 5am shuttle to Provo on Saturday morning. I didn't get to sleep that night either until after midnight and then it was Daylight Savings on top of that.

Exciting: I bought a car. I bought a car. I bought my first car. I BOUGHT A STINKIN' CAR! Well... the parents helped out... mostly. Okay entirely... for now. But still. I bought a car!

Expensive: Cars are expensive. So are trips to Provo. So are towing companies.

Stressful: Said car got towed within ten hours of me owning it. Not even kidding. Tacked on an extra $200 to the cost. Go figure.

Religious: Since it was stake conference, I went to Heather's stake Saturday night... the speaker went 30 minutes over. 30 MINUTES! Not cool. Not cool at all. Especially since I was starving because I forgot to eat on this day and I had woken up at 4am. And then woke up this morning for church as well.

Depressing: I have some friends in Hawaii. None were really affected past a few having to evacuate "just in case." But it kills my heart to see the Youtube videos of Japan. Heather and I watched them for a while. They're super interesting, but sad.

Delicious: Heather is an awesome cook. We made pancakes the first morning I got there and she even adds almond flavoring like my dad. We also made basil-pesto chicken in the oven, spaghetti, and delicious homemade french fries from this super good recipe she had. Well done, Heather. You'll make a great mom someday!

Hilarious: I should probably wait to tell this story until my parents are ready to hear it. But, suffice it to say it involved a policeman, and something I definitely did NOT do wrong. And no, I didn't get in trouble. I was proven innocent at the scene. Let your imagination go wild!

Spontaneous: I was originally not planning on getting back here until tomorrow. I even had my Chem homework done really early so I could give it to my friend for him to turn in for me tomorrow. But, after certain events today, we decided it was best for me to come home now. Good thing, too, because I had totally forgotten that I also have a Chem quiz in class tomorrow that I can't really afford to get a zero on!

Reminiscent: I miss Florida. A lot. A whole stinking lot.

Pictures soon.

Playing With Light

It's hard to spell your name backwards...

We made oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies. Best. Cookies. Ever! Thanks to Ashley for the recipe! Pretty sure I'm gonna puke, though, after eating so many...

We tried to outline each other with the light. This was fun...

But you can see what a difference changing the batteries in the flashlight made!

We live in Cloud 9. NOT Apartment 9. Especially if Natalie's around.

Smiley face with the giant nose... Ashley said it looked like an upside down question mark.

The Thinker. Or at least an attempt...

I tried to do Mickey Mouse. Because, you know, I'm me. It turned out to more resemble Pooh Bear, though. Actually, it doesn't really resemble anything really well...

Me in my fail of a "gangsta" pose.

This is what Ashley and I would look like if we were one person. Kinda creepy, I know.
