Gonna Miss These Guys

I see animals doing really silly things on the safari.  Believe it or not, an animal pooping is not the most interesting thing out there.  It's sad that, when I think the animals are being adorable, the guests hardly even notice.

For example, where the okapi is, there's a giant log on the ground.  The other day I drove through and the log was covered in maybe fifteen vultures lined up on it.  And then the okapi was pacing back and forth in front of the birds.  I almost died laughing.  Seriously, it looked like the okapi had recruited the vultures to help with some secret mission.  Or some creepy animal ceremony...

Okay, so maybe I have done too many safaris.

Then there's the pelicans.  They seriously look like they're doing yoga sometimes!  Like, this one stands on one foot and stretches the other out in the air.  When it does that, it opens it's wings out, I assume, to keep balance.  It looks literally like it's doing yoga.  I actually mentioned that on a safari the other day and the lady behind me laughed and agreed with me.  Yes, I appreciate that one guest who laughs at me.

The hippos talk quite a bit and it's like a bunch of grunting.  But today I got to do an empty safari (miraculously, seriously I thought I'd never get to do an empty round again cuz we've been so busy, but surprisingly today we were dead).  I came around to the hippo and she started grunting and for the first time it sounded like she was laughing!  Seriously.  She started laughing at me and then splashed in the water a bit and laughed again.  They've done this many times before, sometimes splashing with each other, but it's never sounded so much like laughter before.  Now I'm going to be looking for it...

The flamingos just crack me up too.  The thing about the flamingos is that they (and the crocs) are pretty much the only animals we can pretty much guarantee will be on every single safari.  So I always have that part of the ride exactly memorized and it's just boring.  But then lately I've noticed how silly the flamingos are.  I mean, they've always been super noisy.  But they "fight" too.  And they chase each other which is stinking adorable.  This one always is showing off it's wings, and sometimes it'll open it's wings and just run around in circles.  I've seen it do that like three times now and it always cracks me up.

Jabali is always funny, too.  The baby elephant.  Seriously, just exactly like a little kid.  He just has to be the center of attention.  Although the older he gets, the less he runs around which is kind of sad.  He plays with Luna all the time, though.  The two of them are always rolling around on the ground and pushing each other.  It's so funny to see Jabali try to push Luna with his trunk because he's like half her size.  Adorable!  The other day Luna tried to climb over a big log and got stuck, so Jabali came up behind her and was trying to push her the rest of the way over.  So stinking adorable.

One time I came around to cheetahs and saw one standing on the rock so I pointed her out.  "Hey look!  There's a cheetah!  And it looks like it's about to jump somewhere!  Let's watch her jump!"  Nope.  She wasn't about to jump.  She just needed to relieve herself... definitely the funniest time I've ever seen an animal take a poo because my entire truck laughed at me.

I did a safari a while ago and a few trucks up ahead got stopped for an ostrich.  So as we waited I told my guests we were stopped for an ostrich and talked a bit about ostriches to fill in the silence during our wait.  Then, we went back on the move and shortly thereafter found the ostrich.  The guy sitting in the first row had his little two year old sitting on his lap and as we came around the ostrich he proceeded to say to his child, "Wow.  That is one ugly animal!  Can you say ugly?  Yes, see, this thing is what we call ugly. Yuck!  That thing made us stop.  Look how ugly it's face is."  I had to turn off my mic and wipe the tears from my eyes trying not to laugh.

I'm gonna miss these animals.  A lot.  The people make me laugh too.  Like the other day a woman asked me how to tell if the giraffe was male or female.  My response?  "Umm, the same way as a human?"  The whole truck cracked up.  I since have been told that male giraffes are darker in color... meh.  Whatever!

I'm gonna miss this job!  I'm going to miss trying not to laugh so many times a day, and failing at not laughing just as many times throughout the day.  Seriously, sometimes just what I hear on the radio makes me laugh.  I love it!

Ohhhh, my life is so awesome!

Animal Sightings

I've done so many safaris I don't even remember them anymore.  In fact, I love going back through this blog and reading what I wrote because, to be honest, I don't remember some of that stuff ever happening.  And it even happened just in the past few months!

Today, the lion was not only walking around in a perfect view of both the male and female, but he also started roaring.  He actually roared right on call for me!  I mentioned that it looked like he was going to roar to my guests and told them if they were quiet, we might be able to hear him.  And then, magically enough, he really started roaring!  I've heard him roar before, but it's always exciting to hear from the animals!

The hippos also spoke to us today (that's a lot more common though... probably the most common, in fact).  And I heard the cheetahs for the first time!  It's hard to hear the cheetahs because they're so far away.  But recently I was given an idea to pay more attention to listening to the animals, or, more importantly, allowing guests to listen to the animals.  The cheetahs sounded just like a cat, actually.  They were playing with each other.

I got a little worried today as I came around the elephants.  One was laying down on the ground on it's side and not moving.  It almost looked dead, but then it started rolling in the mud and another little elephant came over and started throwing dirt onto the first one's back.  They're so cute!  One time the elephants were playing like that and they even started talking very loudly!  So awesome!

We've also been having problems with squirrels lately.  I'm not really sure if I wrote about the squirrel that attacked me a while ago.  Basically, it lunged at my face and if I hadn't have dodged it it probably would have killed me.  Okay, so that's a slight exaggeration, but you get the point.

Anyway, there's this little squirrel that apparently someone's been feeding.  Everyone keeps blaming us safari drivers.  I haven't done it, but apparently there's such a big issue that they've been threatening reprimands for feeding the squirrels.  This just made me laugh.  But seriously, they've been having a big problem with the squirrels being not afraid of humans.  One even jumped onto my manager's leg the other day.  They come right up to us humans saying (in squirrel speak of course), "Food?  Food?  You give me popcorn?  Yes?"  Super cute... but also just a tad creepy.

Ah well.  I love the animals I work with.  I love my job.  And I'm super lucky for this experience!  I'm definitely going to miss this job!

Baby Sables!

I heard stories from the people I work with about when we got the addax a while back.  They said they just came to work and suddenly there were fact cards and the leaders basically just said, "Here's a new animal.  Memorize it and look for it."  Done.

Well, a few days ago they mentioned our "baby Sable Antelope" were coming out on show.  I didn't even know we had baby Sables.  I'd only ever seen the adult.. male I think.  Usually they put him over with the zebras, but once in a long while I'd spot him somewhere on West Savannah (out with the giraffes and Ankole cattle and such).

So yesterday was the magical day.  Their first day on show.  They put burlap all around the reserve to help protect them, just in case they got a little "lost."  And we got the little cards that had random Sable facts on them.  More Sable facts than the ones we had already memorized.

The only problem?  They didn't happen to warn us that baby Sable Antelope look absolutely nothing like adults. I mean, seriously.  Look:

So I was driving around and looked out, looking for a small group of Sables and instead saw two adults and several little reddish looking things.  I wanted to say, "What in the heck is that!?"  But of course, it's easy to figure out in that situation, since I knew every animal on the reserve except that one.  I'm just glad I didn't misidentify a squirrel or something as a baby sable.  The main thing I was worried about was that I didn't know how big the babies were, so I was scared I'd hit one.  But there were trucks parked all around the reserve both keeping an eye on the sables and keeping an eye on us drivers.  It all went well.

And I'm really excited for our newest addition! They really are adorable.

And in closing, something stupid I said on the safari yesterday (this could seriously be a daily thing here, stupid things I say).  This comment made my whole entire truck burst out laughing.  Soooo embarrassing: "The male lions of the pride are generally all females."

Meant to say, "The female lions of the pride are generally all sisters.(or at least closely related)"

On The Safari: Randoms

On Strollers: Stroller parking is one of my many jobs.  It's actually called "Pram Parking."  Because "Prams" are strollers.  Anyway, it's a fun job because it's the only job where you actually get to interact and talk with other cast members as well as guests.  It's also not such a great job because parking strollers and keeping everything looking good and organized is really, really hard.  But we encounter funny things too, every once in a while.

I can officially say that I have now had a parent attempt to leave their child in the stroller while they went on the ride.  Many parents do so jokingly.  They'll jokingly ask about babysitting and such.  But then there was that one dad.  Who pushed his stroller, with four year old in it, into our area (which is what we like them to do... just we prefer them to take the child out first), and continued down the walkway leaving his four year old happily munching on his Pringles and watching the birds fly around.

It took us a second to track him down since he just continued walking and didn't speak English.  We told him he needed to take his child with him, and he got mad at us!  He actually got mad at us because he said that we told him he wasn't allowed to take the kid with him because his kid had Pringles.  Okay, the Pringles can't go on the ride, but the kid can.  Crazy!

We ask the guests to unload their child from the stroller quickly, and/or in line to make the process as smooth as possible.  It's always annoying when a parent takes five minutes to unload their stroller because they have child, other child, certain buckles, rain shades, food, candy, cameras, purses, etc. etc. to deal with.  This is very understandable.  They are tourists and there is a lot to keep up with.  I just really appreciate it, though, when we have very simple people who have nothing but a backpack and a small foldable stroller with a kid in it.  It's always a relief.

Sometimes guests don't like us to park their strollers.  This is really annoying, but again, understandable for those with trust issues. But it's hard on us because there's a fairly specific system that we use in order to keep everything looking good and organized (and keeping it easy for guests to later find their strollers - for example: park strollers in one places, "limos" in another, foldables are together, and big clunky singles in another, etc. etc.).  But then others come in and mess it up.  But, overall, it really is a nice job.  Plus we get fans.

On Fastpasses: I am thoroughly amazed at the amount of guests who don't understand the Fastpass system.  The more I learn about it, the more I can see where people could get confused, but still.  It's always been a very simple concept for me.  You go to the ride for which you want a Fastpass, you put your park ticket in, it spits out a Fastpass that says "Return between 'A time' and 'B time'" and you return between those times to skip to the head of the line.  You can't get another Fastpass until your current one expires OR two hours from the time you got it, whichever comes first.

I had a very angry man today who showed me his Key To The World card (the card that Disney Resort guests get that is basically their room key, but they can also charge money to it in the parks... kind of like a credit card, and it is their park ticket to get in as well) and insisted that he had paid "good money" for it to have Fastpasses on it and why wouldn't I let him skip the line when he paid "good money" to skip to the front of each line for the duration of his vacation.

It doesn't work like that.  I tried to explain how it worked to him, but he was so mad he couldn't even listen.  He just walked away grumbling about how everyone changes their stories and Disney gipped him out of his "good money."  I literally couldn't even get five words out.  The funny thing is, the way Disney works, if he had just talked to me we were slow enough that I could have just given him some Fastpasses to "make up" for his anger and such.  But he wouldn't even listen to anything I had to say.  He just wanted to yell.  Lame.

It's the worst when I get people who don't speak English asking about it.  It's hard to explain in a foreign language.  But people think you have to pay extra, some think you have to have a Fastpass in order to ride the ride at all, some also get Fastpasses and then still enter through the normal line.  At the very end, right before they get on the truck, they'll pull it out... this always confuses me because I'm wondering what in the world they're thinking it's for.  Weird.  And then of course, they get mad that they paid extra and didn't get anything.

Don't worry though, I get really, really happy guests too!

On BoCo: Booking Coordinator is another really fun position, but it can get extremely boring when it's slow.  You basically stand at the front of the line scanning for food and drinks, making sure everyone is "appropriate" to ride (everyone, even children and babies has to have clothes on, including shoes, which we have to enforce sometimes because parents will strip down their kids when it's hot sometimes), and counting the guests and helping the wheelchairs and such.  I had two little kids the other day who came through and were your classic Disney kids who were unbelievably excited about everything.  "We went on Everest!  It was so much fun!"  "No, my favorite part was Dinosaur, but it was really scary."  "Yeah, she was scared, but I didn't even close my eyes even once!"  "Yes you did!  Remember, with the big dinosaur!?"  "No I didn't, it was so much fun."  "Oh oh, and we got to see Tigger!  We saw Tigger!"  "Mom, where's the autograph book, I want to show her his autograph because we really met him!"

Cutest thing EVER!

On Cute Things:  Baby elephants drinking the water together.  Rhinos rolling around in the mud.  Lions playing, pacing, and climbing.  Giraffes running (actually that looks a little more awkward than cute because their bodies are so long and gangly... it looks like it's got to be hard).  Thompson's Gazelles wagging their tails like puppies.  Baby mandrills the size of my foot running around playing with each other (okay, so my foot is an awkward thing to compare them to, but I couldn't think of anything else that's their size).  Warthogs leaning down on their elbows to eat.  Hippos freaking out at the birds that land on their backs.

I get to see this stuff.  All. The. Time. :)

On Free Stuff: Definitely one of the best parts of any poor college students life (or anyone's life, for that matter) is free food.  I love that Disney randomly has these picnic things where the managers cook for all their employees and we all pig out on the food that is served to us by our managers.  It's just great on so many different levels.  But anyway, yesterday they made hamburgers and hot dogs with Disney potato chips and every kind of dessert imaginable.  Seriously, there were so freaking many desserts.  I'm pretty sure every manger must have brought one, and some more than one.

Anyway, along with all that free food (which in and of itself was awesome) we had a raffle with prizes.  And nearly everyone who entered won something.  I won another copy of the Toy Story 3 Commemorative Edition on BluRay and DVD.  Goody!

On Playing: I've been out playing a few times lately.  I'll try and put up pictures soon.  LOTS of pictures.  Yesterday we went to Hollywood Studios and then Beaches and Cream and then visited some resorts.  So much fun! :)

All Kinds of Random Stuff

Today was clean check. We did nothing. And we passed. I love my roommates!

The rice that I ate when I had lunch with Pres Clark was rice pilaf. I had just forgotten the word for it, but yeah. There it is!

Only 21 more days of school! And if you take out weekends that leaves only leaves 15! Actually, that's kind of scary considering all I have to do in that time.

I just got back from the pet rescue. Apparently they found out that their newest bird rescue has Parrot Herpes. Yeah, that's disgusting. But it's contagious to the other birds (not to humans, thank goodness, but I'm taking a shower anyway cuz I'm freakin' disgusting from all the cleaning we did!) so we had to clean everything.

Both my papers that were supposed to be due Friday were pushed back another week. I'm still planning on getting them done by Friday, though so I'll have more time for this one big project.

Tomorrow's Rabbit Rabbit day. Don't forget!

Did you know it's possible to sunburn your eyes?

Exotic Pet Shelter

So as an explanation to those animals I posted a little while back....

I've been volunteering with a local exotic pet shelter. It's sort of for one of my classes. My persuasion class requires us to find a community organization and then work with them to win this $200 grant. We went to talk to the owners, and I just fell in love with the animals and can't stop going back.

Off the top of my head, these are the animals that they currently have and I've gotten to play with:

Seven snakes (one is missing at the moment... slithering somewhere in the house), a chameleon, two spotted geckos, a bearded dragon, two turtles, three sugar gliders, two chinchillas, three chickens, one other kind of chicken (not sure the exact name), two conures, one parrot, four budgies, four ferrets, one "normal" bird (one that you'd find somewhere outside... a family tried to house train it and they couldn't put it back in the wild), two dogs, a pygmy goat and one more animal that I can't remember what it's called but it can walk on walls which is freakin' awesome!

At least I think that's all of them. They all have names too, but I'm not even gonna try to go through all of those. I'm still learning their names.

Anyway, they're really nice people and I love helping them out. It's so much fun! I doubt I'll do something like this in the future, but for now it works out perfectly! And I've learned some really cool things about animals. More on that to come later. :)

So Cool!

You'll never guess what I've been up to the past two days!

But if you read my facebook status you'd have a pretty huge hint. :)

Oh yeah, and here are some more hints. Heeheehee.

More details later.

My Past Week

Yes, I know my life's been utterly and unbelievably pathetic lately. Here are some pictures and hopefully the pictures that I post a week or two from today will be much more exciting!

Faraday. Sitting in MY chair. Giving me "The Look"

DC with Dad

Mom wanted chicken for dinner...

I was trying to make the farther chicken jump but didn't notice the one closer to me pecking my other hand with more food.

Faraday stole our food. And every time I put the pork in her food dish she insisted on taking it out and moving it back out into the hall for all to see.

VA Safari Park--we got some food and drove through and fed the animals.

In case you can't see... his head was in our car!

These stupid animals didn't seem to understand the meaning of "roadkill."

Black with white stripes? Orrrr... white with black stripes?

Tigers get into slap fights too!

Hey fatty! Wassup!!!
