I picked up a PAC shift today! It was awesome! I was a little nervous this morning when I first picked it up. I've been checking the Extra Hours line every day, numerous times a day because I've only been getting 30-32 hours each week. And there haven't been any shifts I could pick up. The very, very few there have been have been during the time I'm already working. And no restaurants in the area want to hire me because they need more availability than I can offer.
But today was the day! I was not only able to pick up six hours tonight, but I picked up eight extra hours for next week so I'll have almost 40 hours both weeks. Ugh. Pathetic. Hopefully things will pick up for the Holidays.
But anyway, I worked the Halloween party tonight so I wore the old purple bat hat costume. I saw a lot of friends from last year, which was great too. Plus, it was an awesome night. However, I have learned that there is an attitude among MK workers that is not present in any other location I've ever worked. They really are more arrogant about themselves and their jobs. I wish they'd be more helpful to "new" people than the way they are just judgmental and not helpful. For me, I already knew exactly what I was doing and actually remembered well enough to the point that I was able to help a lot of the new people. Some of the EHH-ers didn't even know I wasn't statused in that location.
Some of the cast members just knew I was "new" though and talked down to me a lot and it was really annoying. However, overall it was a really fun night. My only problem was that I kept wanting to greet everyone with the word "Jambo!" which is an African Safari word. Not really useful in the Magic Kingdom...
I spent the day in Magic Kingdom and even got my hair cut under the castle! I've been wanting to get my hair cut for ages, but it hasn't really been a high priority. Finally today I had time and a ten dollar bill. I was in and out of Kingdom Kutters in less than ten minutes and she had cut my hair exactly like I wanted it with layers and bangs and everything! I was very impressed (and when I told her, her response was, "I should hope so, I've been doing this for thirty years!")
Great day overall! We also got free rice krispies because apparently tonight we did a phenomenal job at everything! A few days ago at work we got a free pancake breakfast too and calendars! They were pushing some sort of donation thing. Yes, I donated. Fifty cents. Of my paycheck. Each week. For however long I choose to continue. They try to get all cast members to participate and they have a looooong list of organizations you can choose to donate to. And you can even choose the percent of what you donate, but they encourage all Disney employees to donate to charity organizations.
I was skeptical this morning but I'm definitely glad I picked up this shift. I could have had today off, but I had a lot more fun at the parks than I would have sitting on my butt watching TV and messing around on the computer all day. Plus, my teacher said to do one thing that scares you each day, and picking up that shift honestly did scare me a bit...

Teamwork
One major part of my job is breakdown. We breakdown our ropes as close to the back of the parade as possible to make it seem like no parade ever existed and facilitate the movement of the gigantic swarm of guests that always ensues shortly after a parade. The parade route is, in a way, cut in half when it comes to breakdown. The breakdown process in the west is entirely different than in the south.
For this post, though, I will only explain breakdown for the west. Each person gets two position, one for during the parade, and one for breakdown.
The clipper begins the process by going to each of the posts (or stanchions) and unclipping the ropes from the stanchion and then clipping them to each other. The stanchion puller grabs the stanchion and puts it on the nearby cart pulled by the cart puller. The plugger comes next putting the plug in the hole left by the stanchion. At the rear of the process comes the roller who rolls up the rope on a heavy roll they wear on their chest. Both sides of the route break down at the same time, and to be sure each roller is the same distance behind the back of the parade, there are two rope holders that each have one hand on their roller and one hand on a rope and their job is to push of pull the roller to ensure both sides are breaking down at the same speed.
Ideally, this entire process remains within ten feet of the back of the parade. I'm proud to say we usually do a very good job, too, and it's very fun when we all get it right! But we really heavily, if not, entirely on teamwork to get the job done.
The two hardest jobs are clipper and roller. The ropes are very tight, so you have to be strong to get some of the clips off. I've even had guests help me with it a few times after watching me struggle. The clipper also has to be careful not to cut their hand open (something I've also done) because if you start bleeding you are no longer allowed to help in the breakdown process at all. No bleeding on ropes because we have to make new ones and that takes forever!
Roller is hard because you have to be constantly moving your arm rolling up the rope and the roll gets very, very heavy near the end. It's also hard because if the clipper or others have trouble and get behind, you have to make up for it by suddenly rolling super fast. The third reason it's the hardest is that it's very easy to lose the roll. By "lose the roll" I mean the rope sometimes gets off the roll track and instead gets stuck between where your hand is on the handle and the actual roll it's supposed to be on. When you lose the roll, like cutting your finger open, your done with the breakdown process and kicked off the route and someone else has to jump in and roll the rest by hand which is way harder than using the roll.
The reason I'm explaining this is partly for my own memory's sake, but also because I have learned a lot from this breakdown process. I've learned a lot about team work and learning how people work together to accomplish things.

Random Pictures
Helen had never driven a car before (from China) so we went to the Tomorrowland Speedway to let her try her skills... unfortunately the cars there max out at about 6 MPH. Seriously... I can run faster than they go. But she had fun.
Helen kept asking me, "Why do Americas... they trow their money away? You in recession, no? But I just sink it funny you trow money down there... no one get it!" All I can say is.... yep. You're right. :) Haha. But really it's only a few coins per person and for a few pennies, if you can give someone hope and a wish (after spending $5000 on a trip to Disney World)... it's worth it. :)
The talking trash can sang happy birthday to this princess. It followed them all around the park AND knew their names!

Magical Moments
In my job we have these things called "magical moments." Not sure if I've written about them before, but it's basically where we try to make a certain guest's day extra special. When I worked merch, we would play games like tic-tac-toe or play with bubbles or do puzzles. Sometimes it would be a bit bigger like taking their picture and having a particular family be the "model picture" of the day and they'd get a free 8x10. In my job now we let certain families participate in the parades or we get veterans to participate in the flag retreat ceremony. Magical moments can sometimes be as big as giving a guest a free stay in Cinderella's Castle for the night (I think they've stopped doing that at the moment though).
What's really cool, though, is that sometimes guests can be magical moments for the cast members. The most common magical moments for us come from little kids. And yesterday I got to have one of the best magical moments ever from a six year old.
I put up the ropes for the parade and was standing in front waiting and watching my area making sure no one was running out into the street (I had TWO runners on Monday!! they about gave me a heart attack!). And suddenly this little girl was freaking out. And by freaking out I mean I have never in my life seen a child more excited for something. She was jumping up and down and screaming.... in a good way (yes, Dad, that is possible).
She was so excited for the parade to come it was hilarious to just watch her. She asked me if she was going to see Mickey and I told her, "Of course!" She then informed me that she knew Mickey would be in the show, but he told her he had to go take a shower because he was sweaty from the last show that he had just finished performing in called "Dream Along With Mickey."
As the parade came by she was asking me to name every single character. I was able to get Stitch to come say hi to her and he made a face at her so she stuck her tongue out at him. As I started to walk away to make sure the rest of my area was clear she grabbed my shirt and yanked me back to her to tell me I couldn't leave because there were characters still coming. And she was jumping up and down and screaming the whole. freaking. time. Her dad was taking pictures of the two of us the whole entire time. It was the most fun parade I've ever done. Even though I've only done about four so far. She was so much fun!
When the parade finished I had to leave and it was so cute how she kept grabbing my shirt and pulling me back into her because she didn't want me to leave. I love working parades. I love guests who are so excited! I love that I'm in about a million photo albums and probably just as many home videos! I love living at Disney World! I love my life!

Best Day To Go To Disney
I would just like to document that yesterday was pretty much the best day of the year to go to Disney. Even the MK was emptier than I've ever seen it. Ever! We also heard that the other parks were empty too.
Helen and I were there for only four hours (from 11am-3pm) and hardly waited in a single line. Seriously! No more than about five minutes of waiting anywhere!
We went on: Space Mountain (fastpass), the teacups, Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, Splash Mountain (fastpass), Thunder Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Carousel of Progress, the Tomorrowland Speedway, the PeopleMover, Mickey's Philharmagic, the steam engine train, and the Barnstormer. All within four hours... plus we watched two parades, listened to a traveling oompa band, saw the talking trash can, and took a couple of drink and bathroom breaks. It was great!
Now I'm off to the MK again, but this time for work. Tomorrow I begin training for PAC... something everyone has been telling me to be excited about since day one. I can't wait!!!

First Day in the MK
I'm still working on finishing documenting the cruise. More for myself than anything... but yeah. I thought I'd let that be known.
Today I woke up at 5am. Boarded the bus around 6am. Got to work a little before 7am. Clocked in a little after 7am. And then walked around the Magic Kingdom ALL FREAKIN' DAY!
Literally. We walked around until around 2:30. At this time I took a "break" by going and getting my costumes at costuming, running home to drop off my costumes and change into more comfy clothes, and then going straight back to the MK to play for the rest of the day.
Although I have to say the first part of the day was a lot like playing too... except that I was wearing formal business attire and wasn't allowed to answer my phone when I was on stage.
I can't really say much about what we did... but it was certainly fun and I learned a LOT. And I saw a bunch of things that made me want to just stare because it's not the sort of stuff you get to see and experience every day! Except that I will.
Also, I love my job. A lot. I have the coolest job ever!

If I Don't Post Now...
It may never happen. So much stuff happens here that I never get around to posting because I'm too tired or I forget.
Tonight was so totally amazing. Actually, today was totally amazing. Actually, every day is freakin' amazing.
After work tonight I headed over to the MK to hang out with some friends. We stayed until park close (which was at 11pm). After watching Wishes (the fireworks show) we ate Funnel Cakes and rode Thunder Mountain Railroad twice in a row. We wanted to do Splash Mountain but it was too late. After 11pm. BUT Spectromagic, the parade was stepping off at 11 so we waited around to see that. Because Thunder Mountain is at the back of the park we just hung out around where we knew the end of the parade would be.
And there was nobody. Literally no one there. It w as so great. Just the four of us, some cast members who were controlling traffic (or should I say the lack of traffic) and one other family with a stroller. We were the only people for about 150 feet. We put our bags down on the ground and then followed each section of the parade. We walked with one section of the parade getting 100% attention from the characters, and then ran back to the next float for more attention. Mickey Mouse blew us kisses and made the "I *heart* you" sign. Pluto acted all bashful as we all screamed to him. He came over to us and we pet his nose and gave him high fives. The Queen of Hearts gave Heather the "Off with your head" symbol and then Mary Poppins came over to us and apologized for her. Peter Pan got into a fight with Snow White because her dress was too poofy and the seven dwarfs were just hilarious!
Gipetto was definitely my favorite. He's on the last float with Pinocchio and then Minnie is behind them. We were planning on following Minnie for the last little bit of the parade but as luck would have it the float broke at the very end. So those characters were just stuck for several minutes stopped until they dragged in a back up motor to pull the float the rest of the way off-stage. In the meantime however we totally got one-on-one time with those characters. Gipetto started dancing so we copied him. When he realized the float stopped he acted like he had a paddle and was trying to paddle the float the rest of the way. Then when that didn't work he held out his thumb like a hitchiker. We told him he could come with us so he pretended to jump off the float. As we were distracted by Minnie, Lis started taking her hair tie out of her hair. So Gipetto started fixing his hair. And then his mustache. And continued on and on. Then he made the "call me" sign. Then he got Pinocchio's attention and told us to call Pinocchio. Basically setting his son up with us. So stinkin' funny. LOVE it!
Anyway, working in Hollywood has had it's perks too. I happen to go to work every day right before they start the parades. I get to see the characters at their finest and it's amazing. I freakin' LOVE my job!!!

Picture Overload

We went to go to the Crystal Palace a while ago. But we got there really early for our reservation. So we decided to go on Thunder Mountain Railroad. Right before we got on the ride, Janessa grabbed my camera. I asked her what she was going to do with it and she just said, "You'll see." She held it in the air the whole entire ride! It's a good thing I trust her. She got some awesome photos!

This is at Hollywood Studios. They have this kid thing where kids actually get to fight Darth Vader. It's adorable to watch! I just had to blog about it!
For Halloween I dressed up as a twenty year old college student. See, I'm really only nineteen. It was funny cuz as we stood in line for candy moms of little monsters and princesses would look at us and say, "Oh, this is the candy line! You can go around us if you want. We're just waiting for the candy." We just responded with, "We're waiting for candy too." Teehee, I like candy! (Actually the majority of it was candy I don't like and I ended up giving almost all of it away)

I think Heather's been wanting to do this for a while, but as we were driving on to property one day we decided to stop and get pictures in front of the sign.
On the metro on the way into Magic Kingdom for the Christmas Party. Except the monorail stopped and s at idle on the tracks for like ten minutes. Ugh, we got bored. But we took pictures!

Unfortunately, shortly after we got there, it started raining. LAME! So we went to seek shelter. Where else is better than a place that gives us free cookies and hot chocolate!?

The rain only got worse though. A bunch of character spots w ere canceled as well as some shows. Sad! So we went to a dance party at Ariel's Grotto. The stepmother and stepsisters from Cinderella were there.
The stepmother came over to me and actually freaked me out a bit so I went to take a step back and basically stepped on Heather. The stepmother saw me and came right over to me and said, "You are not dancing. I was to see some moves." in her "stepmother" way. I chuckled and started dancing. Later we did this song "A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut, McDonald's, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut" and you have to do the moves with the restaurant and it gets faster and faster. The stepmother came over to me again as that song was playing and I was attempting to keep up with the music. As she approached me I told her, "Hey! See? I'm dancing! Happy?" She came up to me and said, "Ohh, so you know this song do you. All right then, let's see it!" I tried to dance, obviously failing since I've only heard the song like twice in my life. She watched me for a few seconds as I laughed and "danced" and then said, "I do not approve," And walked off with her nose in the air. Shoot, good thing I don't have a stepmother.
It was funny though because when the "Cha Cha Slide" was playing there's a part in the song where it tells you to go down to the floor. As everyone went down, the stepmother remained standing and directed everyone else to stay down pushing her hands down at us and stuff. Sooo funny!

Just a little taste of how crowded the Cosmic Rays dance party was. Probably because it was raining.
The fireworks show was awesome. All kinds of Christmas songs and the fireworks were literally all around us and the castle kept changing colors and it was just awesome!
This was my attempt at getting a shot of the finale of the fireworks show. 'Nuff said. :)
After the fireworks we hung around for a bit because we were hoping the show would start right after (actually, it was scheduled to start ten minutes after).
During that entire ten minutes this crew of tons of people came out and started squeegying (sp?) the stage area off. They worked fast and did a magnificent job. We even applauded.

Sorry, no show. It was canceled just like the other one earlier due to rain. "But get your cameras out for this 'unique' photographic experience! All the characters from the show came out with a sign...
They shot some fireworks...
And then left... Can you spell "depressing?" Ah well.
After our attempt at watching the show in front of the castle we went down Main Street to watch the parade. I didn't really get a picture of it, but it was snowing! On Main Street! In Florida!! LOVED it.
I just love Heather's excitement at this stuff. She's the only one of us who had seen the parade already but was possibly more excited than both of us for it to come. So funny!
Mickey and Minnie started off the parade beautifully. But they moved around so much it was hard to get a decent picture. Actually, everyone moved around too much to get a decent picture. At least... that's my excuse!
I love Winnie the Pooh!
Chip and Dale are just so stinkin' amazing!
Who else but Santa Claus is going to end the Christmas Parade?
I just can't get enough pictures of the castle lit up at night.
Right after the parade we looked down Main Street and saw that the show had started up again, so we quickly ran down the street to see the end of it. We actually caught a decent sized chunk of it! It was cute, but I still wish we'd have seen the whole entire thing from our old spots!
As we were leaving the park we just had to say goodbye to Piglet and Tigger!
Apparently I missed the memo to be making that hand sign. Ah well....
We went to go to the Crystal Palace a while ago. But we got there really early for our reservation. So we decided to go on Thunder Mountain Railroad. Right before we got on the ride, Janessa grabbed my camera. I asked her what she was going to do with it and she just said, "You'll see." She held it in the air the whole entire ride! It's a good thing I trust her. She got some awesome photos!

Sorcerer Mickey awesome. To be honest Im' not really into character meet and greets but if I'm living at Disney World I have to put a few in.
And then Mickey made me kiss him. Do you see the red in my face? Ugh.
It's a joke at Disney World that everyone learns from the trams how to say "Please stand clear of the doors" in Spanish. Wanna learn? It's right here!
This is at Hollywood Studios. They have this kid thing where kids actually get to fight Darth Vader. It's adorable to watch! I just had to blog about it!
For Halloween I dressed up as a twenty year old college student. See, I'm really only nineteen. It was funny cuz as we stood in line for candy moms of little monsters and princesses would look at us and say, "Oh, this is the candy line! You can go around us if you want. We're just waiting for the candy." We just responded with, "We're waiting for candy too." Teehee, I like candy! (Actually the majority of it was candy I don't like and I ended up giving almost all of it away)

I think Heather's been wanting to do this for a while, but as we were driving on to property one day we decided to stop and get pictures in front of the sign.
On the metro on the way into Magic Kingdom for the Christmas Party. Except the monorail stopped and s at idle on the tracks for like ten minutes. Ugh, we got bored. But we took pictures!

Unfortunately, shortly after we got there, it started raining. LAME! So we went to seek shelter. Where else is better than a place that gives us free cookies and hot chocolate!?

The rain only got worse though. A bunch of character spots w ere canceled as well as some shows. Sad! So we went to a dance party at Ariel's Grotto. The stepmother and stepsisters from Cinderella were there.
The stepmother came over to me and actually freaked me out a bit so I went to take a step back and basically stepped on Heather. The stepmother saw me and came right over to me and said, "You are not dancing. I was to see some moves." in her "stepmother" way. I chuckled and started dancing. Later we did this song "A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut, McDonald's, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut" and you have to do the moves with the restaurant and it gets faster and faster. The stepmother came over to me again as that song was playing and I was attempting to keep up with the music. As she approached me I told her, "Hey! See? I'm dancing! Happy?" She came up to me and said, "Ohh, so you know this song do you. All right then, let's see it!" I tried to dance, obviously failing since I've only heard the song like twice in my life. She watched me for a few seconds as I laughed and "danced" and then said, "I do not approve," And walked off with her nose in the air. Shoot, good thing I don't have a stepmother.
It was funny though because when the "Cha Cha Slide" was playing there's a part in the song where it tells you to go down to the floor. As everyone went down, the stepmother remained standing and directed everyone else to stay down pushing her hands down at us and stuff. Sooo funny!

Just a little taste of how crowded the Cosmic Rays dance party was. Probably because it was raining.
The fireworks show was awesome. All kinds of Christmas songs and the fireworks were literally all around us and the castle kept changing colors and it was just awesome!
This was my attempt at getting a shot of the finale of the fireworks show. 'Nuff said. :)
After the fireworks we hung around for a bit because we were hoping the show would start right after (actually, it was scheduled to start ten minutes after).
During that entire ten minutes this crew of tons of people came out and started squeegying (sp?) the stage area off. They worked fast and did a magnificent job. We even applauded.
